Guatemala, July 22 (Monday), 2013

The Leesburg/Pompano/Cornerstone group arrived in Guatemala on Saturday without any problems!  We spent Saturday getting settled in to our hotel rooms and going over this weeks details.  Sunday was our excursion day in the beautiful city of Antigua, Guatemala.

Monday was a GREAT DAY with all the children at the Malnutrition Center.  There are several of us from the Leesburg/Cornerstone groups that have been here before so today was a happy reunion with some sweet familiar faces!  Tara Carroll from the Leesburg group was here last year and couldn’t believe how much progress Marvin has made in the canaries!  Last year, he was a tiny 4 month old and weighed only 7 pounds! Today he is a chunky little guy who is trying to walk by himself! He still has his great personality and loves to smile, laugh, dance and play!  It’s AMAZING to see the progress these sweet children can make from being at the center.

The teenagers on this trip did an AWESOME JOB today!!  Giselle from Pompano was nicknamed the “Baby Tree” because when she sat down on the floor she was bombarded with about 4 crawling Canaries (the youngest group of children) all wanting to be held.  The Lea brothers (Luke, Tommy, Joe) from the Leesburg group were here last year and were familiar with the routines and jumped right on in helping out… even changing diapers!!

The Chicks are POTTY TRAINING!!!!!   Enough said about that!!

Darla Kell from the Cornerstone group led the staff women in an afternoon devotion, which was translated by one of our fabulous translators- Olivia!  The staff workers are learning Bible verses in Spanish AND English!  AWESOME!!

Our Challenge for the week is to try to get Jeremiah to smile! He is one of our new canaries. He is two and a half years old and weighs only 13 pounds!  He has already made great progress in just one week! Today, I witnessed him eat TWO plates full of food at lunchtime!! He is able to hold his spoon and feed himself.  He’s all business when it comes to eating… which makes us very happy, happy, happy!!!

Our construction crew is a father/son team that was here last year with the Leesburg group.  Scott and David Carroll worked all day doing some serious sanding on new benches and tables that were built to go into the Ducks and Squirrels room.  Their goal is to get them sanded and painted this week!  One thing we learned tonight in WOW time was that all the wood that was used to build these tables and benches came from the trees on the Malnutrition Center property and were cut into boards by Basilio (a staff worker) by using a chainsaw!!  WOW!!!

Right before we left for the evening a new baby arrived!  She is a beautiful one month old.  We will find out more details about her tomorrow.
