Dominican Republic- Monday, July 22nd

Vacation Bible School- Primer día

WOW! What a crazy first day!

Our first day of VBS started bright and early with a beautiful breakfast on the terrace as we prepared to welcome 500 children of all ages!

While we were prepared to welcome literally hundreds of kids today, several more were not able to attend VBS this week simply due to a lack of space or supplies. This typically results in a host of disappointed families waiting outside the church gates listening in on the fun. Therefore during the lesson (primarily taught in Spanish) some of our team was able to engage the children outside by playing games with them in the street. We plan to continue to be intentional with these children and hopefully help them make connections with the church here.

The population here is very eager to acquire some conversational English skills. Therefore one of our teams was asked to select simple phrases to teach each class. Hilary and Amanda worked with younger children who learned basic greetings, please and thank you, and even the colors of the rainbow. While Madison and Nathan taught the older group some greetings, and the hippopotamus song (a very ambitious effort, I might add)! This was a GREAT team effort as we translated the song into Spanish for the kids. We are hoping that the older children will be able to teach the younger ones the hippopotamus song by the end of the week.

Please continue to pray for opportunities for us to intentionally evangelize to those whom we encounter this week, whether inside at VBS or outside playing games in the street.
