GUATEMALA - FBC Port Charlotte Week 2

Week 2 of the FBC Port Charlotte Dental Team.

Sunday morning many of the children’s families came to visit.   It was very bitter sweet to see and hear the joy and sadness of the children and the families.   The parents spent hours playing and engaging with their loved ones, but when it was time for them to leave, many of the mothers walked down the hill with tears in their eyes to leave their precious crying baby behind.   What a sacrifice of the heart to leave their children, but they understand that their child is getting the care that they desperately need to survive.

We then went into the local markets to purchase some fruit and misc goods and see the beauty of San Juan.  Later that evening four of the team members went for a wild ride via tuktuk with Howie and Nanny Carmen with 4 very sick Canaries and 2 Bunnies to the local clinic. Two team members held tight to 3 children in the back of the tuk tuk that almost didn’t make it up a very steep hill.   Howie had to jump out of our tuk tuk to help push it.    Dr. Carlos was on call in the San Juan clinic and checked the children over and sent us home after being at the clinic for an hour.   There is a virus going around. This morning there were 6 Canaries and 4 Bunnies sick.  Please keep these little ones in your prayers!

Monday morning started bright and early in the Dental Clinic with many new patients as well as repeat patients that had a LOT of dental needs.   So far over the past week (NOT  including today) the dental team has done over 197 exams with 112 teeth extracted, 202 fillings and 73 extensive cleanings.   Our patients are composed of the children at the Center, their families, the workers and their families and the day care children, workers and families.  Most of the patients have never had this type of care done to their teeth and have had severe teeth decay or loss at very young ages.  We are very blessed to have the opportunities to share the love of Christ while building stronger relationships with the families and the community.

Today ended with some fun moments with the Squirrels and the Ducks with glow-in-the-dark bracelets.    What a BLAST!!
