HAITI - February 6

Haiti - Monday, February 6

Well, the team we have this week from Frankfort, KY, considered the 30 cubic yards done by the previous group, which included a team from Brooksville, FL, a challenge!  Although they are a much smaller team (13 instead of 24 guys), they wanted to do the 13 cubic yards of the Pastor House slab in one day - crazy, but they did!

It all begins with gathering around the mixer, so everyone knows how much cement, sand and gravel to put in.

Then after the loads start being produced, it's the wheelbarrow lineup.

Then the wheelbarrows full of cement start their harrowing journey up the narrow ramp to the floor of the house to be dumped (we didn't lose a single one!),

...and then spread and smoothed out.

Lunch break and half done!

Getting closer!

Our Haitian "Boss" was our spreader and smoother. We're almost done!

Disaster!  It is 4:15, and the mixer runs out of diesel! The mixer operator (who comes with the machine - we think he sleeps in it) starts cleaning it, thinking the day is done. But we want to finish! A quick trip on a moto by the Boss brings back a gallon of diesel, and we are under way again. By a little after 5 we are finished.

This group has set a new bar!  With fewer guys, no gal helpers, and despite being 2 men short for several hours (installing a new water pump at the old orphanage) and having to move an entire pile of gravel from the front of the compound back to the mixer, they did about the same amount of concrete in one day. We were so tired we could barely climb back on the bus. Not many will last past dinner tonight, and as I write this, I can see two asleep already!

Now that we have the Pastor House slab out of the way, it's back to the Phase 1 house and septic tank. This group wants to block the entire foundation (only about 750 blocks!) by their last day Thursday. Sound crazy?  So did 13 cubic yards of concrete!

God has blessed us with wonderful dry weather, and even a cool breeze most of the day. The way He has led and fed us this trip is truly amazing, and we can't wait to see what He will do next.
