UGANDA Interns Post #4

This week at Genesis School we focused on pulling small groups to help the students who have been falling behind in learning their skills. Within these small groups we have been working on teaching letters and letter sounds. We also have been working on teaching students how to write each letter. To do this we have used different tools to help the students comprehend the information. We have used sidewalk chalk, white boards, flashcards, posters, puzzles, and much more. This week has been a great week at the school and we look forward to the next few weeks.

Moments at school this week that have had us rolling:

1. To remind the students to keep their hair trimmed/shaved, the teachers will take a pair of scissors and cut an X in their hair on the tops of their heads. We were SHOCKED. All but one or two came back to school the next day with cleanly cut/shaven heads, so we guess it sent the message it needed to!

2. Our weekly bathroom story: today, a child went into the restroom with a mango hidden under her shirt (we are unsure of why she did this), but when she leaned down to use the restroom, the mango fell out and down into the hole in the toilet. The teachers were speechless, and we have yet to find out if the mango will forever live in the toilet! (We'll keep you updated!)

Yesterday, our beloved headmaster, Bosco, gave us the day off to go with the Pastor Charles and his wife Judith to explore Sipi Falls, a set of waterfalls about two hours away from where we are staying in Kamonkoli. So we took off bright and early and began our hike up to the falls, believing our guide, who told us it was an hour and a half hike. An hour and a half somehow ended up being three hours full of slipping and sliding on the wet paths, thanks to the recent rain and, of course, the falls. We were exhausted, but the walk was incredibly worth it as we made it to each fall. It was beautiful looking out over all God has created. We were so grateful for our day of playing hookie and enjoyed the great company!

We can't believe another week has passed so quickly, and we are excited for all of our events this weekend (Awana on Saturday, and Sunday School and church on Sunday). Please pray for good health for all of the teachers, because we seem to be passing around a little bug! Thank you for all of your prayers!
