Guatemala, Scholar's Guild

Monday, February 10, 2014

Today is our first official day with the kids and we were are all very excited. We are working with the canaries, dolphins, and bunnies.  There are 75 children in the center.  Our day began with helping feeding the children breakfast which consisted of re-fried beans, a fried egg, and a big piece of bread.  They all cleaned their plates.  Throughout the day we loved on babies, changed lots of diapers and played with them.  We are getting to know each of them.  We also helped to feed lunch to the children.  Lunch was rice and meat mixed together, carrots, and sweet plantains.  Again, they all became members of the "clean plate club."  After lunch we did our afternoon projects.  Tanner and Hannah helped prepare and serve the afternoon snack.  Mrs. Beneford, Jade, Mr. Swoope, and Stephen helped inventory all the donations that were brought in.  Delaney help in the canaries and Jenna put up new picture frames with names over each crib.  We were all very tired by dinner time.  Mr. Art & Mrs. Ilvie fixed a delicious dinner. WOW! time was great as we all shared about our experiences of the day.  We can't wait for tomorrow !

Delaney set alarms for 2:30, 5:30 and 7 am. She also talked until at least 11:30 pm. We're all extremely tired today because of that.

We went zip-lining on Sunday. It was super high, but it wasn't too scary. It was really fun! (Below is a picture of the zipline)

We went to a nice restaurant in Antigua and it was really good! I ate Tanner's blackbean soup in addition to mine because it was so good. We all loved the pink lemonade they gave us. It was really different from American pink lemonade, but so much better. Tanner took any lemonade left for more than 5 minutes. We also had a really hot sauce that was a pale green and burned.

We shopped for a while and got lots of scarves and jewelry from Felipe . Then we went to the market. We had to haggle. Around the town we saw a bunch of clowns dancing and singing in Spanish.

After we got back, we had an orientation and assigned jobs. I'm going to help with snacks and work with the dolphins. I'm so excited! We went to help put the babies to bed after the meeting. They were so sweet! I'm so ready for tomorrow!

I think I might work in the dolphins. The babies are so sweet and quiet. And they're so tiny!

When we walked into the room all of the kids ran up to Mr. Swoope and started climbing all over him and then followed us all over the center. They are so cute!
