MALNUTRITION CENTER - GUATEMALA 3/11/13

Finally, the day arrived for us to go to the Center. For some of us, it was with great anticipation, because we have been here before. For others, there was anxiety about what they would soon experience.

The day started with a tour of the Center given by Howie. As we circled the
facility, our group grew as team members picked up children along the way. Those of us who have been here before eagerly looked for our “favorite” from the last trip. (Yes, we know we are not supposed to have favorites, but it happens. A lot!)

Once the tour was over, we went to our assignments. From the shock of finding the little Chicks on the potty to the horror of bath time with the Ducks, we all bravely tackled the tasks of the day.

Some highlights include:
Seeing the Chicks and Bunnies mesmerized by Sally’s flute playing. It was like they were following the Pied Piper; they dropped whatever they held in their hands and stood spellbound as the music filled the hall.

Finding that Billy is now in school after so many years of healing and growing at the Center.
The smiling faces of the Ducks and Squirrels with the crowns and stars proclaiming "Jesus es mi amigo!"
Holding the tiniest babies, some the size of newborns who were four and five months old.
Hearing Kimberly laugh.
Having lunch ready and waiting for us when we finally staggered into the dorm.
Some special highlights for team members include:
Mary Beth: Watching Maria go so fast in her walker and holding Ana Lucretia again.

Stephanie: Realizing how the kids let us think we are in charge and watching the older girls care for the younger girls.
Ben: Being back with Andres, Gerson and Odilia again.
Kim: Having a crowd of children run up to you full of love.
Kate: Edwin
Caitlyn: Elias falling asleep on my shoulder
Jeanette:  Suzie was surprised to see me!
Judy: When a child went from crying to smiling because of my
encouragement.

Erin: Manuel loved me and cried when I put him down.

Bethany: Planning for the future of the garden, chickens and bees with
Basilio.
