Off to a
Good StartAfter an early arrival on Saturday and a great
visit with the kids at the orphanage, this large team of 26 from Florida and
Kentucky started their first day on Sunday with worship at Pastor George's
church in Kana'a (Canaan). It is built up on a hill with a magnificent view of
the ocean. What a beautiful place to worship our Lord!
Then
we made our way back down the mountain and began our first day of work on the
site. One of the things that had to be finished was putting a top on the septic
tank, so one team organized to form and pour it, using some of the remaining
remesh for strength. The lid didn't need much concrete, so we mixed it by hand
on the ground, Haitian style.
All done but the
hatch!
Several of the guys with some experience laying block
said they would give it a try, so they started off on the front and back walls,
building up the leads to 5 blocks on the corners and then filling in above the
bond beam. They started off slow, but as they got the hang of it, things went
faster. We were lucky to have two real scaffolds lent to us by Julio Herrera, so
that made it a lot easier.
Another chore we had to take
care of was to round up all the blocks that had been left around the outside
wall for scaffolding. Who said ladies and the younger guys can't carry
blocks!
We already had several truckloads of sand to begin
spreading for the Phase 1 drain field and the one behind the Director's house.
This is going to be our biggest effort all week, as it will require moving a lot
of sand!
Altogether a very productive first day! This is
a large team that is highly motivated to get a lot of unfinished work out of the
way so we can move on to the roof. We are praying for the Lord's provision and
protection this week, not the least in keeping us safe in the heat!
