Day
two of the Dominican Republic trip was eye-opening and wonderful. We did a lot
of improvising for the church service, but not one person of our team showed signs
of frustration. Instead, we showed love and enthusiasm. The children were awesome,
and they were beside themselves with excitement to see all the “gringos”
finally arrive to see them. The children’s parents came as well, thanks to Pastor
Ruddy preparing them for our visit. The first morning spent with them was
already life changing for everyone.
Mark did the preaching and after he
finished, 5 parents came to accept
Christ into their hearts. It was a
heartwarming time to see them come to Christ. Everyone came to give Pastor Mark hugs and
thank him for his uplifting words. The children were patient while we attempted
to talk to them in Spanish. It was a little difficult at first to overcome the
language barrier, but friendly smiles and warm hugs helped bring the group
together. Also with some patience and practice we are all getting better at teaching
and singing the worship songs in Spanish.
The children were so much fun to be
around and they absolutely love all the attention they are receiving. They all adore
having their pictures taken, especially with the Americans. Matt already has a
favorite child who absolutely loves him. She is a little girl with light hair and big
brown eyes. She hung around his neck all morning and would even wipe the sweat
from his brow for him. After the sermon, Ruddy taught some of our team a few
songs in Spanish, and we taught him how to sing Amazing Grace in English.
Our translator, Jonathan, began as just a
translator but soon became a member of our family. We all love him and hope that
his time spent with us thus far has been as much of a blessing for him as much
as he has blessed us.
Lunch was an interesting experience. There were a lot of unfamiliar
and vibrant foods to try such as plantains, various types of goat, and even cow
intestines! Following lunch, we were invited to Pastor Ruddy’s house to spend
some time in fellowship together. Some of us even climbed on his roof to catch
a glimpse of the breathtaking view. This is just a taste of what a learning
experience this trip has been and will continue to be. Overall, the day was
absolutely amazing, and we are all excited for tomorrow as we begin the first
day of planned activities with the children.
