HAITI - January 28

Haiti - Monday, January 28

We hit the ground running this morning and split up into teams to work on the Pastor House foundation and septic drain field, and the Phase 1 foundation. Phase 1 is the first third of the main orphanage building, which we would dearly love to get done as soon as possible, in order to get the children out of their current miserable living conditions. Phase 1 will adequately house the 35 or so children now in tents, so as soon as it is done they can move. The biggest problem we have right now is the onset of rainy season, which will halt all work excavating anything, so we must get as much below ground work done as we can; we can lay block and finish the building even in the rain.

One team layed out the foundation with string and batter boards and then began to dig it out. Another team continued filling the house foundation with fill so we can pour the slab there, and some of the guys put in the plumbing for the first floor bathroom. Since we had not received our clean fill for the septic drain field, another team dug it out another 6 inches and used the dirt to help fill the house foundation.

The ladies continued their wonderful work with the orphans, doing a VBS all morning, and even took one of the guys with them; then after lunch some of them went out on visitation again, and some stayed and helped with the digging.

Everyone was super tired after this first day, but also amazed at how much got done. We have had to be flexible because of some of the problems we have had getting materials, but we were very productive with what we had, and are looking forward to tomorrow. We are overwhelmed by the needs here, but also by how the Lord is providing so much for us to get the work done, and to spread His word and love.
