GUATEMALA - January 9

“The Lord is good to all, He has compassion on all he has made.”  Psalm 145:9

The Malnutrition Center in San Juan, Guatemala is a study in compassion.  There are those who oversee the ministry of the Center, administering the many details associated with caring for the malnourished, sick, and disadvantaged children in the area.  There are others of you reading this who provided financial resources to maintain, sustain, and improve the Center.  Still others daily labor there with patience and love.

The team I am a part of this week traveled from Georgia and Florida to serve the Malnutrition Center in many capacities, offering extra pairs of hands to help serve the many wonderful children here.  And many pairs of hands are needed to not only care for, but also to show compassion to the little souls housed at the Center.  How the women care for these children on their own without a team of volunteers to assist, I’ll never know!  The many mouths to feed, bottles to make, diapers to change, noses to wipe, vegetables to cut, dishes to wash, toys to clean, and laundry to fold could certainly be overwhelming.  And yet, the environment is stable and loving.

To be even a small part in the shaping and developing of these children that God has made is humbling.  We find ouselves wondering what paths their lives will eventually take; praying for them as we feed them cereal, soup, or spaghetti or as they lay peacefully sleeping; smiling as Alex does contortions in his Bumbo seat while eating, thinking that he could be a great gymnast one day; or watching Victoria, the little explorer, constantly looking for a way to escape the barriers created to serve as baby gates. Little Mayra, still so tiny and struggling just to grow and flourish, smiling from her heart in a way that lights her big brown eyes.  God’s plan for them is really no different than His plan for me; they are created to serve Him, to worship Him, to one day be His hands and feet.  All they need is opportunity.  The opportunity to grow up strong and healthy and to experience the One Who knows them best and loves them most.  The Malnutrition Center exists to provide them with this opportunity and our team is only one of many with the chance to be part of their lives.

Many of us have formed or will form special bonds with these children.  It’s a natural part of life. We were created for relationships.  I pray that through the experience of the many teams of people that will come and go from these children’s lives, they will learn the valuable lesson of compassion, will one day realize that they are perfectly loved by a Creator, and will share that compassion with others.
