Today is our third day here in Guatemala and we are all so eager to get to the center and see the children! Most of the men in our group and a few women are heading over to the construction site today. There we will be demolishing a little house and building a new one. There are two elderly ladies living in this “house” and have lived there for at least 35 years! When we got to the site and stepped out of the van we all looked around wondering where the house was. They pointed to a little wooden shack and said “There it is”. In shock, we walked over to the house discovered it was nothing more than a few pieces of wood put together. The bathroom was outside in another little shack. However, it only had three walls instead of four. Inside the bathroom was a little cement toilet. There was no plumbing or running water. The beds were also homes to tons of little spiders. There were spider webs and dust everywhere! It only took a few minutes to move all of their stuff out of the house, as there weren’t many things to move. But this was all they had and this was the only life that they knew. We even had to coax one of the ladies out of the house because she did not want to leave. None of the guys had prior experience in demolition, building, electricity, or mixing cement. But they all came together as one and made it work! There were also some young boys in the neighborhood that we could not get enough of! We played football and Frisbee with them all day! We gave them animal crackers and lollipops which they devoured within seconds. At the end of the day we had finished laying the foundation for the new house! Tomorrow we will finish building and move the ladies back into their new house! Can’t wait to see the look on their sweet faces!
