Post for August 5, 2009

One of the inspiring sides of God is how he can take a group of people from all over Florida and use us for his good. I am sitting here writing this with my new BFF Sandy who is from Chapel Hill Baptist in Tallahassee. She is a real estate agent and a pastoral secretary. I can bet she didn’t know she would be our resident paper lady (she has moved papers from the medical/dental team to the pharmacy). She also changes the toilet paper and the trash. She also helped admit patients. What is my point… God has a plan for all of us from paper lady to painters on this trip. Our devotion was from ken this morning and he just reiterated how we don’t know how much impact we can have on a child’s life that can shape their future. After devotion the team rode in one large van and rocking and rolling Joe led us in some really contemporary songs (not) once again proving we can all worship together regardless of our style. In all fairness it really set the tempo for another day of serving. When we arrived the line was extended around the side of the building with moms and children hoping to see the doctors/dentist. It is amazing how patient the people are in waiting to see the medical personnel. Dr. Stan and Dr. Jorge saw upwards of 70 people and Dr. Sheri extracted 39 teeth and cleaned eight patients teeth. Sadly we feel like it is just the tip of the iceberg.

God has blessed us in many different ways this week. We have three children with us on this team who have been exposed to an entirely different culture and way of life. They have seen first hand how little children require being happy. One ball can entertain an entire room full of children for hours. The teenager Whit is setting a new trend with paint covered shoes and pants. Steve left painting looking like a large rendition of Kermit the frog. That is dedication. The men have truly shown their sensitive side by continuing to migrate to the baby room to cuddle them. Joe shared his MP3 player with Brenda (a severely malnourished 10 mo old) and received in return a beautiful smile.

Our goal of finishing the canary room has almost been met. The men have really pressed forward even though yesterday it looked like a Smurf had decorated the floor due to a malfunctioning paint sprayer. The babies should be moved back in by Friday due to their hard work.

The tireless effort of all involved we hope has communicated god’s love to these children and their families. The group has now returned from one of many McFlurry runs so we are off to bed. Hasta la vista mis amigos.
