Progress in the Dominican Republic!

We have used the last two weeks without teams here to catch up on some of the detail work and try out some new methods and materials before more teams arrive starting week after next.

Most of the remaining windows were cut out, 5 roofs put on, one house got a "mezcla" instead of stucco interior (we won't do THAT again!), another got a stucco interior started, and the main event was today when we put in the "piso" (floor) in the first house. It is an inch and a half of concrete with a color integrated into the surface. We chose red this time, but will also try green.

We had all of Santo's regular crew plus two assistants and another of Santo's sons. First up was to set up the mixer and assemble materials.

Then we started pouring and spreading in one of the bedrooms.

Then a dry mixture of white cement and colorant was sprinkled on top and trowelled in.

It turned out great, and matches the roof color.

Then we switched over to the kitchen - living room side.

Even an afternoon downpour couldn't stop this team!

The floor is all done now except for the bathroom, which Santo's team will finish next week (it requires special attention because of the shower, plumbing and drains).

House number one (H1) of seven is now complete except for paint, wiring and fixtures.  We are all fighting over who gets to move in (just kidding), but it really is a nice house!  A lady from the neighborhood came by with her little boy and oo'd and awe'd over it.  These homes will be palaces to the poor families that get them!  One down and 99 to go!

Come down and join us in this wonderful work.  The country is beautiful, the people are gracious, and the work is not hard (foam blocks, not concrete!).  There are many VBS and outreach opportunities as well as construction.  This is a great mission opportunity that will change you forever!
