HAITI - March 13

A Very Special Day
Haiti - Tuesday, March 13

Today was a very special day in many ways. It was our last day in Haiti. It was a day that we completely finished the foundation and slab preparation for the Phase 1 building. It was a day we finally got the two septic ditches filled with sand (hooray!). And it was the day of the first baptism at the orphanage!

We started with the chore of filling all the insides of the foundation wall's blocks with cement, and extending the rebar upwards for the walls. Gil thought up an ingenious way to help us pour into the holes using a box he made. This meant we could use wheelbarrows to bring the cement over to the walls instead of buckets and made everything go faster.

Apparently that meant there was not enough hard work to do, so a cement sack lifting contest broke out. Reed thought he had the record with 23 lifts, then there was a one-on-one, but the winner was Max with 29. Our Haitian workhorse David could only manage about 9!!

But we got done by a little after noon, and even got the two drain fields filled at long last.

But the real treat of the day was when Jody got baptized, in of all things, our septic tank! The tank has served as a reservoir for our concrete mixing and is full of clean water (not its intended purpose!), so Mac made use of it for the baptism. Marc translated for the Haitians and they were invited to follow suit, especially David, but they were not ready yet.

So the Mango Tree Orphanage has hosted its first baptism! God has blessed this team and this trip in so many wonderful ways. He guided us to such incredible progress in the construction, kept us safe from illness and injury, allowed us to share fellowship with one another and precious moments with the children of two orphanages, and reinforced His real mission here with the orphanage's first baptism. Please pray that His purpose here will continue to be accomplished and His glory revealed!
