GUATEMALA - March 6

Another day at the Center today, and although some of us had planned to rotate, none of us could leave what have quickly become “our kids”. I know, it’s only been two days, But I’m telling you, only after meeting these children can anyone understand how swiftly we’ve fallen in love with them! We did much of the same things that we did yesterday—simply caring for the kids and loving on them.

One thing that we really reflected on today though, was the hard-working women who keep this Center alive. We couldn’t even imagine what it would be like without teams coming in to help! Each age group has at least ten kids and only one or two “nannies” who work non-stop feeding, changing, cleaning, putting to bed, etc. It struck us just how beautiful these women are and how lovely their hearts must be!

It’s also been cool trying to communicate with them. With our limited Spanish and their little or no English, sometimes it’s hard to feel useful. But they don’t ever seem to mind, and in the end we realize that we are all serving the same purpose—caring for these wonderful kids in any way that we can.

It’s only the second day, and I already get choked up whenever I think of leaving this place. Stay tuned for Thursday’s entry. That is, if I can even see through my blubbering enough to type something up!

On a side note, I believe we all have just about mastered the ability to doze and/or sleep most of the bumpy and winding way back to the hotel. Whether this can be accredited to our own skill or the simple fact that we are all completely exhausted as soon as we leave the Center, I can’t tell.
