We were welcomed with open arms and even given flower corsages! The children were brought over from the orphanage dressed in their Sunday best and sang for us. After church and looking over the new building site, we went over to see the place they are living now. The conditions they are currently living in are enough to make you cry. All the more reason to get the first phase of construction done as soon as possible, so we can get them moved over!
After lunch we drove into town and saw how much of the earthquake's devastation is still there. The Cathedral where all the priceless frescos depicting Haiti's history and culture were is now just a shell. Everything inside was lost. The National Palace is still flattened, and no work has been done to repair it.
We are four days away from the second anniversary of the earthquake, and there is so little evident progress.
After seeing downtown, we drove up above Petionville to Boutillay, where there is a magnificent overlook of the city, and lots of artisans selling their arts and crafts. What a contrast! Everything up there was beautiful and untouched.
Tomorrow the men begin five days of heavy work on the orphanage wall, the pastor's house and its septic system. The ladies will be doing VBS with the kids in the morning and joining the men after lunch.
Please pray for our safety and that we will be a beacon here that will shine God's love out to the lost in this area.
