Theme of the start of our trip: “HURRY UP AND WAIT!”
After spending nearly 9 hours in Orlando International Airport because of a delay due to mechanical issues on the airplane (apparently you can’t fly without a radar), and a forced but very pleasant overnight lay-over in El Salvador, we FINALLY arrived this morning in Guatemala! MuchAs Gracias must go to our fearless leaders and experts on international travel with groups, Janice, Lester, and Elise and Lourdes providing vital translation in Spanish for getting us all there in one piece. Needless to say, it has been an adventure already!
Today was jam packed with check ins, orientations, and necessary meetings to ensure we were all informed on what to expect and our roles will be once we are blessed to come in contact with these beautiful children. However, they did allow a little bit of fun slipped in there. Our first meal in Antigua, Guatemala was in the nicest McDonald’s (yes, I said McDonald’s) possibly in the world, followed by groups splitting off to spend time with the locals in the markets and shops in town or going up to the mountains for some zip lining.
I chose to be in the zip lining group, and in the interest of not taking up pages and pages of description, I will say just this: being up in the clouds looking at the scenery and the villages below was the closest to heaven I have been thus far in my life; and then experiencing the rush as you race between the trees, made me feel even higher than that. There really are no words good enough. I don’t think any of us could have asked for a better way to start this trip, delays and all.
Tomorrow we will be starting our real mission for this entire adventure. I ask all of you following to continue your prayers and well wishes for our group, but please add special ones in there for the little hearts and souls we will be working with. They are the entire reason each of us are here and as much fun as today was--I’m sure I don’t only speak for myself when I sa--the true feeling of heaven won’t be felt until we have those babies in our arms. I’m sure I will be writing this week to tell you then, that those moments with them will be the closest to heaven I have experienced.
Sending our love and gratitude back to our friends and family,
Becca
