Today many of us felt we worked the hardest we’d ever worked in our lives. We changed diapers, rocked babies, served lunches, washed dishes, blew bubbles, played with parachutes, taught school, painted walls, made crafts, pushed swings and bathed babies. At the end of the day, we were exhausted, but we also felt a sense of accomplishment, peace and fulfillment for a job well done.
The big event of the day was a Christmas party for the workers at the malnutrition center. It was a time to bless the workers and their families, to show them God’s love and to share the gospel with them. What an amazing thing to see over 100 people dressed in traditional garb gathered together enjoying lunch in the outdoor pavilion as the young girls from our group sang Christmas carols. The highlight of the party was when Dr. Dulce Dudley shared the gospel in Spanish and prayed the sinner’s prayer with them. We may never know the fruit of that event but, there is no doubt that a seed was planted in their hearts today.
We sensed God’s presence in many ways today. Some saw Him in the laughter of a child who had been sad and distant all week and was now happy and content. Others heard him in the soft breathing of a room full of sleeping little girls. And still others saw Him move in the life of a childcare worker as she told us she had just found out she could keep her job that she thought would only be temporary. God hears the prayers of His people and is always moving and working in the world today.
For half of our group, it was our last day at the center so, needless to say, there were tears as we pulled away from the smiling, waving group of Guatemalan children standing on the walkway to bid us adios. We waved back and took some final pictures as we all thought to ourselves…we are going to miss you beautiful brown eyed children, but…don’t worry, Jesus loves you and …we will be back!
