We got a lot accomplished today at the Malnutrition Center, and everyone was very excited about our progress. The women began by working with the newborns in the Canary Room. We were very thankful that we were able to purchase diapers to use today. Yesterday, we had to use bed liners, which came up to the babies' chests. They had bruises where the rope had been tied to hold the bed liners up. Before this trip, we had never considered diapers such a blessing. After feeding the babies, playing with them, and trying to nurture two little girls who were very sick, we played with some of the older children. The men finished priming and began painting the outside yellow and blue. They also were putting up soffits to prevent animals and rain from getting inside. We were thankful that the rain has held off so far, even though it is rainy season, allowing work to be accomplished outside. After a lunch of grilled hotdogs, we all began working outside to continue the painting. We took periodic breaks to play with the children, including dress-up and time on the playground. Juanita, an eight-year-old who is very excited to have begun school, was eager to show-off her schoolwork from the day. It is amazing to see a child who considers school such a priviledge. By the end of the day, at least 75% of the building had been painted with two coats of either yellow or blue paint, and the soffits are making progress. We told the children "Adios" and got hugs before we called it a day.
