Sunday May 17, 2009

Today is our first full day in Guatemala. There are seven of us on the team and we arrived around 8:30pm (Guatemala time) last night after a long day of traveling. We spent Saturday afternoon in Miami, eating lunch at the Children's Home then driving around for a tour of South Beach. We had some good laughs during the tour, getting us ready for a good week in Guatemala. After arriving in Guatemala City and retrieving our 14 checked bags (full of supplies for the Nutrition Center), Steve Otto, mission team leader for Inglesia del Camino, picked us from the airport and brought us to Pollo Campanio (Guatemala's KFC) for a late-night dinner. We had about an hour drive from Guatemala City to Antigua up mountain roads of an elevation of 5000 ft. We were all very tired by the time we arrived, but that didn't prevent us from taking in the night scenery and appreciating the beauty of our hotel. Despite the music playing from the town, we all slept soundly, ready for our Sunday in Antigua.
We ate a tasty breakfast Sunday morning of scrambled eggs, fresh bread rolls, beans, plantains, watermelon etc. Ron led us in a devotional and we had the morning to relax and get settled before heading to church. On our walk to Inglesia del Camino (Church of the Way) we stopped in Antigua's main courtyard for a picture by the fountain. We also saw the cathedral and the beautiful views of the volcanoes, cobblestone streets, and ruins of the city. The church service was bilingual and very uplifting. It was an incredible experience to worship in both Spanish and English and hear Pastor Mike's message. After church, we ate lunch at La Pina del Sol, in a quaint courtyard, visiting with Pastor Mike and his wife Nancy. We all enjoyed a meal of chicken, rice, and pineapple as well as a delicious drink of lemonade and coconut milk. After we finish preparing for our service at the Nutrition Center this upcoming week, we we will spend some of the afternoon exploring more of Antigua.
